Adam, Eve and their descendants, if they were allowed access to the tree of life, would they have been able to ‘live forever’?
Believing and positively responding to any presentation depends on its soundness. If there is any doubt one would need a time for questioning before accepting. My prayer is: May my writings be sound and clear.
A Scripture that comes to mind, Heb 11:1, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, and the sign that the things not seen are true.” Add to this, Jam 2:14, “What good does it do, my brothers, if someone claims to have faith but does not have any works? This kind of faith cannot save him, can it?”
Were you to list that which you hope to obtain in life, in order of priority, what would your list look like? And, this is important, do you have faith, in yourself, that you can achieve it? The truth of the matter; you can hope and believe until you’re blue in the face you won’t succeed unless you do something about it (faith, if it has no works, is dead in itself).
I would like to believe that, top of your list, would be your hope on ‘Eternal Life’. The ‘Eternal Life’ I’m referring to has reference to, 1Co 15:-48-, “Those who are made of the dust are like the man from the dust; those who are heavenly are like the man who is from heaven. Just as we have borne the likeness of the man who was made from dust, we will also bear the likeness of the man from heaven. This is what I mean: Flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, and what decays cannot inherit what does not decay.
Let me tell you a secret. Not all of us will die, but all of us will be changed-in a moment, in the blinking of an eye, at the sound of the last trumpet. Indeed, that trumpet will sound, and then the dead will be raised never to decay, and we will be changed. For what is decaying must put on what cannot decay, and what is dying must put on what cannot die.
To the Philippians Paul writes, 3:-19-, “Their (the men, from the man of dust) destiny is destruction, their god is their belly, and their glory is in their shame. Their minds are set on worldly things. Our (of the Man from heaven) citizenship, however, is in heaven, and it is from there that we eagerly wait for a Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ. He will change our humble bodies and make them like his glorious body through the power that enables him to bring everything under his authority.”
There are many ‘faiths’, beside Christianity, which present ‘a life after death’ set of guidelines. Worst still, Christians, which represent thousands of religious groupings, each put forward their own understanding as to the obtaining of this ‘Eternal Life’. Jesus ignored Nicodemus’s flattering, Joh 3:-5-, “Most assuredly I tell you, unless one is born of water and spirit, he can’t enter into the Kingdom of God! That which is born of the flesh is flesh. That which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Don’t marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born anew.’”
One is either ‘united’ with the ‘man from dust’/sinful or, ‘the man from heaven’/righteous. Concerning the ‘Eternal Resting-place’ Jesus taught, Luk 16:-13-, “No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to one, and despise the other. You aren’t able to serve God and Mammon… Everyone who divorces his wife, and marries another, commits adultery. He who marries one who is divorced from a husband commits adultery.”
One who is still ‘united’ to the man from dust cannot ‘fall in love’ with Jesus with the hope of being ‘united’ with Him; it would make him an adulterer. Paul explains, Rom 7:1-, “Or don’t you know, brothers (for I speak to men who know the law), that the law has dominion over a man for as long as he lives? For the woman that has a husband is bound by law to the husband while he lives, but if the husband dies, she is discharged from the law of the husband. So then if, while the husband lives, she is joined to another man, she would be called an adulteress. But if the husband dies, she is free from the law, so that she is no adulteress, though she is joined to another man. Therefore, my brothers, you also were made dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you would be joined to another, to Him who was raised from the dead, that we might bring forth fruit to God.”
The ‘missing link’; how is ‘one made dead’ to the marriage Law (see under topics, ‘Re-birth’) to enable one to be ‘joined to Jesus’ and in this manner ‘share his righteousness? Of more importance; how did one become ‘a sinner? An example of ‘imputation’, Heb 7:-9-, “One might even say that Levi, who collects the tenth, paid the tenth through Abraham, for he was still in the body of his ancestor when Melchizedek met him”.
In the same manner we were ‘in Adam’s body’ when he ate of the forbidden fruit, Rom 5:19-, “For as through the one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the one will many be made righteous, that as sin reigned in death, even so might grace reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Eternal life can only be had through a rebirth and the receiving, by faith, an eternal spirit or, breath. Having then been ‘born again’, one is in danger of the following likelihood, Jas 4:4-, “Adulterers and adulteresses! Have ye not known that friendship of the world is enmity with God? Whoever, then, may counsel to be a friend of the world, an enemy of God he is set.
“Do ye think that emptily the Writing saith, `To envy earnestly desireth the spirit that did dwell in us,’ and greater grace He doth give, wherefore He saith, `God against proud ones doth set Himself up, and to lowly ones He doth give grace?’ be subject, then, to God; stand up against the devil, and he will flee from you.”
The above has reference to the parable, Mat 12:43-, “When an evil spirit comes out of a person, it goes through dry places looking for a place to rest. But it doesn’t find any. Then it says, ‘I’ll go back to the home I left.’ When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean, and in order. Then it goes and brings along seven other spirits more evil than itself. They enter and take up permanent residence there. In the end, the condition of that person is worse than it was before. That is what will happen to the evil people of this day.”
After re-birth and the receiving of a holy spirit the danger is the evil spirit yearns to return ‘home’. For this reason Jesus said, Mat 28:19-, “Go ye therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptising them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I commanded you.”
Paul’s advice, Col 3:1-, “If then ye were raised together with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated on the right hand of God. Set your mind on the things that are above, not on the things that are upon the earth. For ye died, and your life is hid with Christ in God.
“When Christ, who is our life, shall be manifested, then shall ye also with Him be manifested in glory. Put to death therefore your members which are upon the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry; for which things’ sake cometh the wrath of God upon the sons of disobedience: wherein ye also once walked, when ye lived in these things. But now do ye also put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, railing, shameful speaking out of your mouth. Lie not one to another; seeing that ye have put off the old man with his doings, and have put on the new man, that is being renewed unto knowledge after the image of him that created him: where there cannot be Greek and Jew, circumcision and uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian, bond-man, freeman; but Christ is all, and in all.
“Put on therefore, as God’s elect, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, meekness, longsuffering; forbearing one another, and forgiving each other, if any man have a complaint against any; even as the Lord forgave you, so also do ye: and above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfectness. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to the which also ye were called in one body; and be ye thankful.
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts unto God. And whatsoever ye do, in word or in deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. Wives, be in subjection to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them. Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is well-pleasing in the Lord. Fathers, provoke not your children, that they be not discouraged.
“Servants, obey in all things them that are your masters according to the flesh; not with eye-service, as men-pleasers, but in singleness of heart, fearing the Lord: whatsoever ye do, work heartily, as unto the Lord, and not unto men; knowing that from the Lord ye shall receive the recompense of the inheritance: ye serve the Lord Christ. For he that doeth wrong shall receive again for the wrong that he hath done: and there is no respect of persons.”
Neglect the above and stand in danger of an invasion, 1Pe 5:6-, “Humble yourselves therefore beneath the mighty hand of God, so that at the right time He may set you on high. Throw the whole of your anxiety upon Him, because He Himself cares for you.
“Curb every passion, and be on the alert. Your great accuser, the Devil, is going about like a roaring lion to see whom he can devour. Withstand him, firm in your faith; knowing that your brethren in other parts of the world are passing through just the same experiences.
“And God, the giver of all grace, who has called you to share His eternal glory, through Christ, after you have suffered for a short time, will Himself make you perfect, firm, and strong. To Him be all power unto the Ages of the Ages! Amen.”
